Rumors and Public Speculation
Since the couple were media darlings, the news of their divorce spread like wildfire. Since neither party wanted to speak about it in detail, media speculation was at an all-time high. One source claimed that they split because the actress wanted to live in her native Australia, while Cruise insisted on staying in the US. Others claimed it was because Kidman refused to embrace Scientology fully.
The real reason behind the split appeared to be the couple’s fertility issues. In a 2012 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kidman revealed how badly her ectopic pregnancy affected her. “I know the yearning. That yearning. It’s a huge, aching yearning,” she said. “And the loss! The loss of a miscarriage is not talked about enough. That’s massive grief to certain women.”
The final blow came when the church had her adopted children distance themselves from her. Moreover, Cruise’s marriage to Kati Holmes would see the actor get a biological child of his own, something he and Nicole never had. Sadly, Cruise’s third marriage wouldn’t last either, as he and Holmes would divorce in 2012. The rumors about the church’s involvement in their split would spread once again, especially after Cruise gained full custody over his daughter, Suri.
