What’s the first thing you would do if you found yourself being dragged farther and farther away from the shore by a 50-ton whale? If it were us, remaining calm would be at the bottom of our list, but Nan, an experienced diver and seasoned marine biologist, knew she had to stay calm. She knew that humpbacks don’t have teeth but rather soft baleen in their mouth for eating krill and small fish. She also knew that her best bet of staying alive was distancing herself from the whale and returning back to her vessel. To do that, she tried to collect her cool – as long as the whale wasn’t aggravated, perhaps it would grow bored and leave her alone.
