Although historians theorize that the Underground Railroad was a physical tunnel system, many experts are hesitant to agree. To build such a system would have taken countless manhours and funds that the abolitionists didn’t have. Also, it would have been borderline impossible to displace tons of dirt without raising at least a tiny bit of suspicion from a slavery sympathizer.
